Study options
Exchange semester or short stay
You can spend part of your studies in Switzerland through an exchange programme. For one semester or an academic year, you attend courses at a Swiss institution and experience student life in a new environment.
Full degree
It is also possible to complete a full Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Switzerland. You apply directly to the university of your choice. Each institution sets its own admission criteria and deadlines.
How to apply
Applications are submitted directly to the chosen university. Requirements usually include:
- Previous certifications
- Proof of language skills (English, French, German or Italian, depending on the programme)
- Motivation letter
- Completed application documents
Deadlines often fall between December and April for the autumn semester. Starting early helps you prepare all required documents on time.
Visas and residence permits
Administrative requirements depend on your nationality.
- EU/EFTA students must register with local authorities after arrival.
- Non-EU/EFTA students generally need to apply for a student visa before entering Switzerland.
Processing times may vary, so it is important to clarify the requirements well in advance.
Costs and scholarships
Tuition fees at public universities are moderate compared with many countries. However, living expenses in Switzerland are high.
- Tuition fees: approximately CHF 500–2,000 per semester (depending on the institution)
- Living costs: around CHF 1,500–2,500 per month

Housing and student life
Finding accommodation can take time, especially in larger cities such as Zurich, Geneva or Lausanne. Many students live in shared flats or student residences.

Health insurance and student jobs
Health insurance is mandatory for all students and must be arranged shortly after arrival.
